    FINITE STRAIN ANALYSIS OF LIMESTONE/BASALTIC MAGMA INTERACTION AND FRACTURE: LOW ORDER MIXED TETRAHEDRON AND REMESHING

    In this investigation, we use a recent constitutive framework and remising technique for tetrahedra to analyse the pressure-driven crack propagation of limestone intruded by basaltic magma. Limestone is represented by an least-plastic capped Drucker-Prager model with an hypo elastic term in order to account for inelastic effects from plastic signature. Kinematic hardening is considered for limestone, whereas magma is modelled by means of a compressible Bingham fluid. Classical limit surfaces of the capped model are used to initiate the crack events in the limestone. Propagation is performed by a local remising technique with mesh smoothing for untracked elements. Arnold's MINI element is used to avoid locking in the quasi-incompressible case. Verification (for limestone) examples and a crack propagation example in 3D are performed. A mesh convergence study is performed, exhibiting very promising results

    Price discrimination through transactions bundling: The case of monopsony

    This paper shows that for a price setting monopsony, offering to transact in a mixed bundle of goods of uncertain quality is profit enhancing. The magnitude of this enhancement relative to no bundling is greater the smaller the gap in the degree of quality uncertainty between the two goods purchased is. Moreover, contrary to coventional wisdom, the use of mixed purchase bundling by a monopsonist is trade enhancing. There is more room for a dramatic improvement in the volume of trade in a good with a low degree of quality certainty if its purchase is combined with a good of a substantially higher quality certainty

    Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at significantly higher risk of exposure to influenza virus during seasonal epidemics and global pandemics. During the 2009 influenza pandemic, some healthcare organizations recommended that HCWs wear respiratory protection such as filtering facepiece respirators, while others indicated that facemasks such as surgical masks (SMs) were sufficient. To assess the level of exposure a HCW may possibly encounter, the aim of this study was to (1.) evaluate if SMs and N95 respirators can serve as "personal bioaerosol samplers" for influenza virus and (2.) determine if SMs and N95 respirators contaminated by influenza laden aerosols can serve as a source of infectious virus for indirect contact transmission. This effort is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 5-year multidisciplinary study to determine the routes of influenza transmission in healthcare settings. A coughing simulator was programmed to cough aerosol particles containing influenza virus over a wide concentration range into an aerosol exposure simulation chamber virus/L of exam room air), and a breathing simulator was used to collect virus on either a SM or N95 respirator. Extraction buffers containing nonionic and anionic detergents as well as various protein additives were used to recover influenza virus from the masks and respirators. The inclusion of 0.1% SDS resulted in maximal influenza RNA recovery (41.3%) but with a complete loss of infectivity whereas inclusion of 0.1% bovine serum albumin resulted in reduced RNA recovery (6.8%) but maximal retention of virus infectivity (17.9%). Our results show that a HCW's potential exposure to airborne influenza virus can be assessed in part through analysis of their SMs and N95 respirators, which can effectively serve as personal bioaerosol samplers.CC999999/Intramural CDC HHS/United States2019-04-25T00:00:00Z30029810PMC6482848763

    Extraneous color affects female macaques’ gaze preference for photographs of male conspecifics

    Humans find members of the opposite sex more attractive when their image is spatially associated with the color red. This effect even occurs when the red color is not on the skin or clothing (i.e. is extraneous). We hypothesize that this extraneous color effect could be at least partially explained by a low-level and biologically innate generalization process, and so similar extraneous color effects should be observed in non-humans. To test this possibility, we examined the influence of extraneous color in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Across two experiments, we determined the influence of extraneous red on viewing preferences (assessed by looking time) in free-ranging rhesus monkeys. We presented male and female monkeys with black and white photographs of the hindquarters of same and opposite sex conspecifics on either a red (experimental condition) or blue (control condition) background. As a secondary control, we also presented neutral stimuli (photographs of seashells) on red and blue backgrounds. We found that female monkeys looked longer at a picture of a male scrotum, but not a seashell, on a red background (Experiment 1), while males showed no bias. Neither male nor female monkeys showed an effect of color on looking time for female hindquarters or seashells (Experiment 2). The finding for females viewing males suggests that extraneous color affects preferences among rhesus macaques. Further, it raises the possibility that evolutionary processes gave rise to extraneous color effects during human evolution

    Role of dissolved nitrate and phosphate in isolates of Mesodinium rubrum and toxin-producing Dinophysis acuminata

    Mesodinium rubrum (as prey) is a critical component, in addition to light, for growth and toxin production by the mixotrophic dinoflagellate Dinophysis acuminata. Little is known, however, about the role that dissolved inorganic nutrients play in this predator-prey relationship and system toxicity. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the possible uptake of dissolved nitrate and phosphate by (1) D. acuminata starved of prey, (2) D. acuminata feeding on M. rubrum, and (3) M. rubrum grown in nutritionally modified medium. All single-clone or mixed cultures were monitored for dissolved and particulate nutrient levels over the growth cycle, as well as for growth rate, biomass, and toxin production when appropriate. Dinophysis acuminata did not utilize dissolved nitrate or phosphate in the medium under nutrient-enriched or nutrientreduced regimes, in the absence or presence of prey, or during any growth phase monitored. Changes in particulate phosphorus and nitrogen in D. acuminata were instead strongly influenced by the consumption of M. rubrum prey, and these levels quickly stabilized once prey were no longer available. Mesodinium rubrum, in contrast, rapidly assimilated dissolved nitrate and phosphate, with maximum uptake rates of 1.38 pmol N cell(-1) d(-1) and 1.63 pmol P cell(-1) d(-1), respectively. While D. acuminata did not benefit directly from the dissolved nitrate and phosphate, its growth (0.37 +/- 0.01 d(-1)) and toxin production rates for okadaic acid, dinophysistoxin-1 and pectenotoxin-2 (0.1, 0.9 and 2.6 pg cell(-1) d(-1), respectively) were directly coupled to prey availability. These results suggest that while dissolved nitrate and phosphate do not have a direct effect on toxin production or retention by D. acuminata, these nutrient pools contribute to prey growth and biomass, thereby indirectly influencing D. acuminata blooms and overall toxins in the system

    Mixed and recycled detrital zircons in the Paleozoic rocks of the Eastern Moroccan Meseta: Paleogeographic inferences

Zircon analyses and imaging were carried out on the SHRIMP II, LA-ICPMS and SEM facilities at the John de Laeter Centre, Curtin University, with the financial support of the Australian Research Council (LE150100013) and Auscope NCRIS (AQ44 Australian Education Investment Fund program)The paleogeographic evolution of the Moroccan Variscides has been a matter of discussion for several decades, with current theoriesmostly based on classical geological correlations. In this regard, the scarce number of studies devoted to U-Pb geochronological analyses of detrital zircon populations is particularly limiting when trying to ascribe the different domains to a single continental piece either derived from the West African Craton or to different sources, with some located in the Nubian Shield or the SaharanMetacraton. In thiswork, detrital zircon grains from 10 samples of sandstones from the Paleozoic (Ordovician to Devonian) sequence of the Eastern Meseta andMiddle Atlaswere dated in order to identify possible sediment sources and elucidate the paleogeography of this easternmost portion of the Moroccan Variscides. The main detrital zircon populations have Ediacaran-Cryogenian ages (610–670 Ma, related to the Cadomian and/or Pan-African orogeny) and middle Paleoproterozoic ages (1980–2080 Ma, related to the Eburnean orogeny), which are in agreement with previous data from the Western Meseta, suggesting similarity between both Mesetas, and strong West African Craton affinity. Such an affinity verifies themost accepted paleogeographic interpretation considering that theMoroccan Mesetas remained attached to northern Gondwana during the entire Paleozoic period. The main differences between our samples and those from the Western Meseta concern the minor detrital zircon populations, such as the Cambro-Ordovician and the Tonian-Stenian ones. In particular, Eastern Meseta and Middle Atlas samples lack a Cambro-Ordovician detrital zircon population, usually interpreted as related to the rifting that opened the Rheic Ocean. This population is locally reported in the Western Meseta and widely described in southwestern Europe, where magmatism of this age is well known.     Aetiology and prevalence of mixed-infections and mono-infections in non-gonococcal urethritis in men: a case-control study

    Objectives: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) cause the majority of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). The role of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) in NGU is unclear. Prior case-control studies that examined the association of UU and NGU may have been confounded by mixed infections and less stringent criteria for controls. The objective of this case-control study was to determine the prevalence and aetiology of mixed infections in men and assess if UU monoinfection is associated with NGU. Methods: We identified 155 men with NGU and 103 controls. Behavioural and clinical information was obtained and men were tested for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and CT, MG, UU and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV). Men who were five-pathogen negative were classified as idiopathic urethritis (IU). Results: Twelve per cent of NGU cases in which a pathogen was identified had mixed infections, mostly UU coinfections with MG or CT; 27% had IU. In monoinfected NGU cases, 34% had CT, 17% had MG, 11% had UU and 2% had TV. In controls, pathogens were rarely identified, except for UU, which was present in 20%. Comparing cases and controls, NGU was associated with CT and MG monoinfections and mixed infections. UU monoinfection was not associated with NGU and was almost twice as prevalent in controls. Men in both the case and control groups who were younger and who reported no prior NGU diagnosis were more likely to have UU (OR 0.97 per year of age, 95% CI 0.94 to 0.998 and OR 6.3, 95% CI 1.4 to 28.5, respectively). Conclusions: Mixed infections are common in men with NGU and most of these are UU coinfections with other pathogens that are well-established causes of NGU. UU monoinfections are not associated with NGU and are common in younger men and men who have never previously had NGU. Almost half of NGU cases are idiopathic

    A One-Hour Sleep Restriction Impacts Brain Processing in Young Children Across Tasks: Evidence From Event-related Potentials

    The effect of mild sleep restriction on cognitive functioning in young children is unclear, yet sleep loss may impact children\u27s abilities to attend to tasks with high processing demands. In a preliminary investigation, six children (6.6 - 8.3 years of age) with normal sleep patterns performed three tasks: attention (“Oddball”), speech perception (conconant-vowel syllables) and executive function (Directional Stroop). Event-related potentials (ERP) responses were recorded before (Control) and following one-week of 1-hour per day of sleep restriction. Brain activity across all tasks following Sleep Restriction differed from activity during Control Sleep, indicating that minor sleep restriction impacts children\u27s neurocognitive functioning
